The NFL is gearing up for a big year, with a number of franchises expected to compete for a record number of contracts.
The latest edition of the Pro Football Focus rankings will be released Monday, and the league will begin the new year by making the first major moves of the offseason.
Here’s a look at some of the big names to watch in 2017.1.
Detroit Lions: The Lions will likely spend big this offseason on their defense.
They are expected to re-sign left tackle Nick Fairley and sign free agent defensive end Darius Slay, who is a big upgrade over what the team has at the position.
Slay will also be a free agent after this season, so the Lions could look to rework their offensive line.2.
Chicago Bears: Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is expected to sign with another team and could be a candidate to become the team’s starting quarterback.
The team has been linked to a number other quarterbacks this offseason, including quarterback Andrew Luck.

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles are expected the team to add a starting quarterback, and they could be among the top five teams in the league.
The Eagles have made several big-time moves, including re-signed quarterback Carson Wentz, cornerback Byron Maxwell, safety Malcolm Jenkins, linebacker DeMeco Ryans, and wide receiver Jordan Matthews.4.
Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins will likely be among a handful of teams that make moves to improve their roster.
The Dolphins had a number big-name free agents signed this offseason and have also added free agents in cornerback Dannell Ellerbe, wide receiver Mike Wallace, and running back Ryan Mathews.5.
Green Bay Packers: With free agency set to open, the Packers are expected take a major step forward this offseason by signing former Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters to a five-year deal worth $54 million.
The deal will also include a $14 million signing bonus and $15 million base salary.
The Packers are also expected to be a high-priority free agent for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.6.
Arizona Cardinals: Arizona is expected a high priority for the Cardinals this offseason with a new general manager, but the team will be relying on some big-ticket free agents to help it rebuild the defense.
The Cardinals have a number veteran free agents, including defensive tackle Calais Campbell, running back David Johnson, and defensive end Calais Campbell Jr.7.
New Orleans Saints: The Saints will likely look to add another big-play receiver this offseason as they look to upgrade their receiving corps.

Indianapolis Colts: The Colts could be the biggest priority for free agents at the cornerback position this offseason when they could also sign veteran pass rusher Dwight Lowery to a six-year, $70 million deal.
The Colts also could be in need of some help on the defensive line, which is one of the biggest areas of need for the Colts.13.
Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens are expected one of several teams to make major changes to their roster this offseason to help them win more games, and it’s not a surprise to see them target a free-agent defensive lineman.

New York Giants: New York is expected one big-dollar target in free agency this offseason for defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, and free agency signing linebacker Justin Tuck is expected.
Richardson will be a big free agent and the Giants are expected spend big on their defensive line this offseason if they want to compete in the AFC.15.
